Dear Cardinal Blase J. Cupich,
Good Morning Cardinal, please accept this letter as a call for sincere urgency for community  justice and restoration of lives. In reference to the allegations of abuse by Clergy both proven and unproven. I as a member of the Clergy and a Faith Leader have worked in restorative justice in a community justice capacity for over 10 years based in Chicago. My organization Freedom First International an organization that has engaged some of the most infamous civil rights cases in America over the past ten years.  I along with activist leadership from two other organizations including Violence Interrupters lead a media briefing this past week outside of the Archdiocese Chicago Headquarters, and also I agree with members of SNAP a group that has taken a position on ending this abuse.

It is with this sincere thought in mind that we would ask the church to take immediate actions to protect parishioners and members of the community. While we all should understand that this is a very serious matter, urgency can be placed, and also certain steps should be taken to ensure a sense of urgency to prevent abuses of children.

Small steps to ensure willingness to help for example- Why would you not write a letter immediately to the faithful to be read at Sunday services throughout our city and the United States, offering assurance and specific steps to clean up the issue? For our part we will work with you and any group to protect those members of your community.

A friend wrote, ‘I’ve heard nothing but justification, minimization, obfuscation, etc. from two different parishes in the past couple of weeks. I can no longer continue to attend.’

While this may or may not be true the facts may suggest that – neither the local or national bishops or priests appear serious about ending the torture and clergy sex abuse of children, minors and vulnerable adults. The silence of so many priests and bishops around the country may speak complicity in one way or another.

If you are serious, why would you not remove this stumbling block, which prevents bishops from disclosing child sexual abuse allegations and imposes strict secrecy on the investigation and handling of child sex abuse?

I wanted to tell you as a young man now a Pastor (Bishop) myself I grew up and I was a product of Catholic Parochial Education time which I believe shapes a large portion of who I am today.  This current information about the loss and betrayal of the any member of the faith community more-less the Catholic Church is heart breaking. You still have time to do something about this issue. Change the trajectory. Make a different history. It’s still not too late.

Sincerely,

Bishop Gregg L.Greer President of Freedom First International
