Freedom First Intentional, Violence Interrupters and members from several other activist organizations will hold a press briefing and protest to address one specific community issue: We will ask the local community not to honor the legacy of Rahm Emanuel with his name on the the Riverwalk.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel has told associates that, if anything in Chicago is ever named after him, he would love it to be the Riverwalk, the embodiment of his vision to create a “second waterfront.”
The Chicago Tribune article says. “Despite his failings, outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel deserves to have his name put on the Chicago Riverwalk but we should wait five years.”
The activist disagree with the synopsis from the Chicago Tribune and use multiple examples including: the second-degree murder conviction of Van Dyke, to Emanuel’s sacrificial dismissal of Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy after the cover-up of McDonald’s murder was exposed, Emanuel’s administration had been marked by high profile acts of state violence.
Emanuel tried — and failed, one of Emanuel’s biggest fiasco’s was school policy fiasco was the mass closing of 50 schools in 2013, mostly in black neighborhoods. African Americans in particular are moved to suburbs or other regions to escape poor schools and violent streets.
Emanuel opposed a federal investigation of the police department, opposed efforts to revamp the civilian police oversight authority and give it budgetary independence, failed to carry out a promise to establish a community oversight board, and resisted judicial oversight through a consent decree.
The activist will ask the community to oppose any initiative that suggest to add Rahm’s name on the Riverwalk and suggest that The Riverwalk should dedicated to the “Hero’s of Chicago” including Chicago Violence victims.
