For Immediate Release: Freedom First International, Violence Interrupters and Chicago Activist to draw attention to the backlog of testing at the Illinois Crime Lab that prevents Crimes from begin solved!

wwsu.jpg

Chicago, IL, on Friday afternoon Chicago Community activist leadership will meet to highlight community concerns over the critical backlog of tests on evidence at Illinois State Police labs which has climbed into the thousands of cases and also interfered with the investigation and closure criminal cases while reports show the agency sat on money that could have accelerated results-again, according to established reports. The activist are calling the rally “We won’t stop until the body count stops.”

Fact do show that the state has seen a growing backlog of untested samples and has struggled to improve testing turnaround time.

In previous news reports- Auditor General William Holland concluded that state police provided misleading or incorrect numbers to the governor and Legislature, misstating the size of the backlog.
Holland surveyed state’s attorneys and police statewide about the backlog, and 46 percent said delays in getting test results from the state police had meant criminal charges weren’t filed, cases were delayed or charges dropped, or suspects were acquitted.

“We are falling further and further behind in forensics,” said St. Clair State’s Attorney Bob Haida. “In theory, we can have innocent people charged and guilty people go free.”

“We began making adjustments as issues arose during the course of the audit and they have already begun to improve our system,” Monken said during a news conference at state police headquarters.

The number of cases that had not been analyzed within 30 days grew from 3,426 in 2002 to 10,387 in 2007, or 203 percent, the report said. The amount of evidence submitted for analysis grew 10 percent during the period while forensic staffing fell 3 percent.

Of $387 million provided the department for forensic services during those six years, $19.3 million went unspent, according to Holland’s audit, including $7.7 million for potential employees’ salaries and benefits.

Governor Pritzkers involvement

Governor J.B. Pritzker signed an executive order late August creating a “task force on forensic science” to study a fix for Illinois’ sample backlog that has doubled in the last two years, but those actions are slow.

“This is going to be very, very important,” Illinois State Police Acting Director Brendan Kelly said at the order’s signing. “The governor rightly wants us to be the premier laboratory system in this country.”

State labs have more than 8,000 unfinished DNA tests, according to June numbers from ISP. More than 2,700 of those cases involve sexual assault or abuse.

Quotes from Bishop Gregg L. Greer and Tio Hardiman-Primary Organizers.

According to Bishop Gregg L.Greer-An externally dangerous standard is begin set when officials can’t address the needs of the public-For example-currently the Chicago Police Murder (Homicide)  9.4 % Clearance rate stands against the top ten worst cities in the nation. While part of the problems are logistical in nature (lack of Staffing) there is a very critical public safety issue as well, meaning crimes are not being solved” this issue grossly affects urban communities more often then not. For example we believe there is a possible serial killer taking the lives of women of color, these murders are not being investigated, and that is very tragic!

Everyday, that we have evidence that goes without proper testing, then those who commit these crimes are given the green-light to continue their criminal activity according to Tio Hardiman, President of Violence Interrupters.”

Stand with us on August 30, 2019 at 3:30pm for media briefing

The group plans to move forward with petitioning Governor Pritzkers, as well as sate and city officials including Sheriff Tom Dart and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot during the press conference.

Chicago Activist will join Liberty For Lights Protest Vigil Against what they are Calling Trump’s Illegal Ice Concentration Camps

lfl.jpg
Multinational  Protest Vigil Against ICE  Friday July 12, 2019 Stating at 5:00 p.m. at Federal Plaza 219 South Dearborn Chicago, IL

Chicago, IL- Freedom First International (Bishop Gregg L.Greer) will join Refuse Fascism Chicago and Community Activist across the City to address Trump’s human detention camps, where teen mothers and babies are held outdoors in what we are calling “dog pounds.”

The organizations believe and agree that as a country we have witnessed the sick and elderly confined to “icebox” rooms for weeks at a time. Unbelievably, children as young as 4 months are taken from their parents, medicine is confiscated, and medical care withheld, and LGBTQ and disabled individuals are held in solitary confinement.

Trumps Immigration Threat

But the threat of immigration raids in cities across America this weekend including Chicago this weekend immigrants are afraid for fear of being deported. Since President Donald Trump announced, and later postponed, immigration raids in major U.S. cities have been terrified. Over the last three years, Trump has followed through on many of his tweets announcing new immigration policies, including the Muslim ban.

Multinational Locations Are part of this event
  • Other key events are planned in Homestead, FL, at a migrant child detention facility that has caused mass abuse and neglect.
  • San Diego, near the point of entry site from Tijuana;
  • New York City, at Foley Square, where hundreds of migrants are processed through detention a day;
  • Washington, DC, in front of the Capitol building, to demand action from Congress to end human detention and impeach the President.
  • Chicago, IL will include several groups  Sponsored by:
    Refuse Fascism Chicago (Lead Organization)
    Freedom First International
    July for Justice

Freedom First International and other Community Activist To hold Press Briefing to address Community Violence Trend asking for Reform

CPD MUST Change!

WHERE:   Monday July 8, 2019 starting at  2:00pm CST. CPD Headquarters at 35th and Michigan  (3510 S.Michigan Ave Chicago, IL)

Chicago, IL– Freedom First International and Chicago Community Activist Leadership will address the Chicago violence trends of this Fourth of July holiday weekend where least six people were killed and 62 injured in shootings across the city from the start of this extended holiday weekend.

The latest crime statistics come on the heels of a weekend that, police said shootings are on the decline overall through the end of June.  But in contrast-The activist believe that these deaths are a predictable outcome of our city’s lack of political will to make a change and a long term underinvestment in prevention approaches that work in the city’s urban areas.

Public Health and Stronger Laws

The group believes- Through a public health and stronger laws approach and that focuses on drawing from evidence and addressing the factors that increase or decrease the risk of gun and community violence, particularly in Urban communities that are disproportionately impacted, but together we can save lives. The current issue and argument, misses two things: gun violence impacts every American community, and solutions will only come with a change in federal laws.

Each time community violence occurs, the discourse tends to focus on addressing the issue with a limited number of people.  We strongly support broader engagement of community members, including young people and other survivors of gun violence, policymakers, and others, in insisting that our streets be safe.

We must also insist on that same level of safety for urban places of worship, shopping malls, movie theaters, concert venues, nightclubs, workplaces, neighborhoods, and homes. Those places include the South Side, West Sides of our city.

We are listening to young people from all races, classes, and sexualities, across the city and throughout the country, who are unifying to speak truth to power. We believe CPD and Eddie Johnson must do the same.

We have renewed hope that, together, we can prevent gun violence— not just in the areas where we see mass shootings but also in the case of domestic violence, suicide, community violence, and violence involving law enforcement. The public health approach must evolve, City Officials, community forums, more attention to addressing multiple forms of gun violence.

While Mayor Lightfoot campaigned on reducing crime and made it a top priority in her inaugural address, declaring there is “no higher calling than restoring safety and peace in our neighborhoods.”

Earlier this week, Lightfoot was asked if she’s satisfied by the fact that crime is down year over year and said no “because there’s still so much more that we need to do.”

“We are ahead in violent crimes. We’re down in homicides, we’re down in shootings, and that’s because people are working really, really hard,” Lightfoot said. “Our Police Department absolutely is doing a yeoman’s job. There’s more work to be done.”

Lack of Resources

Freedom First International and advocacy leadership have grown deeply concerned about the Current 14% Homicide Clearance Rate which we believe is a complete failure of Chicago City Policing to protect the community.

“This isn’t something we’re going to allow to be swept under the rug or put up on the shelf for it to disappear,” said Bishop Gregg L.Greer. In years past especially during long hot summer days we have waited for a mystery process to start but CPD and City officials must be clear about where they are lacking resources and attack that area with determination, because if they don’t we are on a trend that will only increase.”

SARS 7-8-2019

Plan of Action

  • Today Freedom First International and Community Advocacy Leadership is asking for CPD to develop a more comprehensive dialog with residents in Chicago’s urban areas.
  • Bishop Gregg L.Greer and other community activist will address resources & underinvestment in Chicago Urban Areas.
