Open Letter to Cardinal Blase Cupich about Sexual Abuse within Illinois Parishes

FFL LOGO

Dear Cardinal Blase J. Cupich,
Good Morning Cardinal, please accept this letter as a call for sincere urgency for community  justice and restoration of lives. In reference to the allegations of abuse by Clergy both proven and unproven. I as a member of the Clergy and a Faith Leader have worked in restorative justice in a community justice capacity for over 10 years based in Chicago. My organization Freedom First International an organization that has engaged some of the most infamous civil rights cases in America over the past ten years.  I along with activist leadership from two other organizations including Violence Interrupters lead a media briefing this past week outside of the Archdiocese Chicago Headquarters, and also I agree with members of SNAP a group that has taken a position on ending this abuse.

It is with this sincere thought in mind that we would ask the church to take immediate actions to protect parishioners and members of the community. While we all should understand that this is a very serious matter, urgency can be placed, and also certain steps should be taken to ensure a sense of urgency to prevent abuses of children.

Small steps to ensure willingness to help for example- Why would you not write a letter immediately to the faithful to be read at Sunday services throughout our city and the United States, offering assurance and specific steps to clean up the issue? For our part we will work with you and any group to protect those members of your community.

A friend wrote, ‘I’ve heard nothing but justification, minimization, obfuscation, etc. from two different parishes in the past couple of weeks. I can no longer continue to attend.’

While this may or may not be true the facts may suggest that – neither the local or national bishops or priests appear serious about ending the torture and clergy sex abuse of children, minors and vulnerable adults. The silence of so many priests and bishops around the country may speak complicity in one way or another.

If you are serious, why would you not remove this stumbling block, which prevents bishops from disclosing child sexual abuse allegations and imposes strict secrecy on the investigation and handling of child sex abuse?

I wanted to tell you as a young man now a Pastor (Bishop) myself I grew up and I was a product of Catholic Parochial Education time which I believe shapes a large portion of who I am today.  This current information about the loss and betrayal of the any member of the faith community more-less the Catholic Church is heart breaking. You still have time to do something about this issue. Change the trajectory. Make a different history. It’s still not too late.

Sincerely,

Bishop Gregg L.Greer President of Freedom First International

For Immediate Release: Freedom First International and Chicago Activist conduct Press Rally to bring Further attention and punishment to Catholic Priest who Sexually Abused Children

FFL LOGO
Chicago Community Activist will conduct a press rally to call on the Chicago Officials and Illinois Archdiocese to urge prioritization of punishment and accountability for the dioceses across the state to take steps and in place policies to hold officials, such as Catholic bishops, responsible for covering up abuse of local children.

The activist are meeting in response to a scathing report from Attorney General Lisa Madigan found that the number of Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse against children in Illinois is much higher than previously acknowledged.

The report said accusations have been leveled against 690 priests, while Catholic officials have publicly identified only 185 clergy with credible allegations against them.
Although the report says that “Clergy sexual abuse of minors in Illinois is significantly more extensive than the Illinois Dioceses previously reported,” it does not estimate how many of the allegations against the 690 clergy should have been deemed credible. Some of the allegations go back decades.

The activist are also calling on anyone in the public to come forward with any information but they recognize that the criminal justice system may not be one where they will get relief, but they are seeking a measure of justice, they are seeking closure.

Official Statement
While Cardinal Cupich and the church are very large part of that is the church-we need to see and know that they taking their allegations seriously, investigating them and acknowledging the crimes that took place, and also publicly disclosing the names of the individuals who committed those crimes.”

STATEMENT ON JUSTICE FOR LAQUAN MCDONALD-CONVICTION OF POLICE OFFICER (Media Advisory) FFI

Two days ago the jury decide to convict officer Van dyke for multiple counts including the second degree murder of Laquan McDonald-normally this would close a chapter in a bad situation that took a young life of  17-year-old Laquan McDonald. Officer Van Dyke was also found guilty of 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

With the conviction of Officer Jason Va Dyke, we at Freedom First Intentional believe- that with what happened inside the jury deliberation room, the main debate was truly not about whether to acquit or convict, We never doubted that officer Van Dyke was guilty of murder.

In truth jurors were split on whether to find Officer Van Dyke guilty of first-degree murder, or second but even by standard-we at Freedom first International believe that officer Van Dyke is merely a poster boy for a long term generational police force that has long misused and abused a underrepresented populous. We ask these questions:

How long does the black community have to struggle to address the long-term systematic genocide that simply reiterates the known fact that our community has been so powerfully underwritten or even written off by those seeking to maintain the status quo?

Yes, in truth, the deep-rooted class system that has existed for hundreds of years is still very much in play in Chicago and around the country to date. Racial inequality in America has its parallel in a class inequality system, even though by definition, race and class are not the same thing.

The class system, for the record, is a defined system of stratification based on economic position in which people are ranked based on achievements such as education and wealth.

The Black community has to understand that the one-sided rhetoric of “law and order,” that Officer Van Dyke comes from was first used by Southern segregationists of the Jim Crow Era, has become more attractive as mainstream Americans have turned to outright racial discrimination, mostly a the urging of a President with more then questionable motives.

In truth jurors were split on whether to find Officer Van Dyke guilty of first-degree murder, or second but even by standard-we at Freedom First International believe that officer Van Dyke is merely a poster boy for a long term generational police force that long misused and abused a underrepresented black Community.

Yes, it is well documented that we at Freedom First International helped organize various protest and court support with William Calloway and others at the core of this fight. We are truly proud of our comrade William and all who stayed the course. We pray for the family of the deceased teen.

But with that in mind we reserve celebration for a time when-the long term challenges of community violence and police abuse,as well as official misconduct that plague black and poor are minimized, this cold winter we have much much more work to do-that work must not stop.

We at Freedom First International will continue to fight because-These racists need to simply own up to their ugly past of slavery and make it right by society, instead of denying, shifting blame, lying, twisting the facts and making black people into these ungodly creatures that they look down on, laugh at and yet, oddly, fear.

We would ask that everyone-Speak up against police inaction. Then, tell your child that he is protected, first by God, and then you. Afterward, we must champion our children’s rights. Then add a training session to the life lesson for your young men and women about the existence of systematic racism and oppression ― be honest with them, tell them the odds are against them, but they can overcome if they have righteous will and fortitude.

Open Letter to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri over the Florida Murder of Markeis McGlockton (Media Advisory)

Markeis-McGlockton25

Good Morning Sheriff,

After careful review of the unfortunate incident from Clearwater- I President Greg L. Greer and my team find it very hard to understand your lack of sensitivity to the issue surrounding the unfortunate death of this 28 year old young Clear water man when Michael Drejka shot Markeis McGlockton outside Circle A Food Store in Clearwater Florida.

In your press conference on July 21, 2018- You actually flouted traditional criminal justice notions to instead encourage vigilantism in this community, giving further credence to the long-held principle that individuals must first attempt escape from a violent situation by using deadly force.

This has been a bedrock of “Surreal Idealism,” with Anglo-American law for two centuries. Used perfectly against oppressed people of color but in many cases not the other way around.

We would hope that longstanding public officials such as yourself  would go further to prevent and embolden individuals from escalation of confrontation, and that would hopefully prevent future deadly confrontations more specifically whereas refereeing these issues to local authorities to prevent and decrease the likelihood of deadly exchanges. An Argument over parking space leads to fatal shooting in Clearwater is tragic on every level.
Promoting vigilantism is a very severe and negative consequence of the “Stand Your Ground,” laws-as you very well know. But as we warn, behavioral changes may not be limited to those who want the right to “Stand Your Ground.” Particularly given the facts of this case, I must warn you and all public officials that young black boys motivated by fear of adults like George Zimmerman (types) may feel compelled to “Stand Their Ground,” too, in a cycle of shoot first, or be shot.

“Does this law create a situation where people shoot first and ask questions later?” Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said in a July 28 Press Conference. “You can have that discussion. You can have that debate. I don’t make the law. I enforce the law.” “I’m not saying I agree with it,” you went on to say, “but I don’t get to make that call.”

But in all actuality sir, people such a yourself who are in high level public positions, should and could seize this very moment to create and foster a dialog that gives hope and deters others from in similarly suited situations from taking the law into their own hands. Yes, in truth you don’t make the law but we would expect you to be the best “Representative,” of that law.

In the Days ahead we (Freedom First International) along with several partner multinational organizations will urge the officials on the ground to file charges against “Vigilante” Michael Drejka in this case

In addition-my office will move forward in the days ahead to publicity sensor you, staring with this open letter to be released to multi media around the country.

Sincerely,

Bishop Gregg L.Greer, President of Freedom First International

press-release

Chicago City Hall 121 N LaSalle Dr, Chicago, IL 60602

*Satish C. Sekar, Jeffery Deskovic, Mark Clements, and Bishop Gregg L.Greer will address the possible Death Penalty reinstatement -In early May Governor Bruce Rauner proposed reinstating the death penalty in Illinois for mass killers and people who slay law enforcement officers, injecting the idea into his re-election campaign by rewriting a gun control bill and sending it back to lawmakers.

Gov. Bruce Rauner seems to be one of the few people in Illinois who misses the death penalty. Our outcry is to begin coalition building in opposition of any proposal urgently and right now. Simply because the Governor is misdirected and there should be no death penalty anywhere much less in Illinois

Speaker Line Up

Satish C. Sekar (born September 1963) is a British author and journalist, and a consultant in forensic evidence. Sekar has specialized since the 1990s in the investigation of miscarriages of justice. His work has been published in newspapers including The Guardian, The Independent and Private Eye, and he has also worked for television documentaries including Panorama and Trial And Error. He has worked on a number of high-profile cases in the UK including the Cardiff Newsagent Three, Gary Mills and Tony Poole (wrongly convicted in 1990 for the murder of Hensley Wiltshire), the M25 Three, and Michelle and Lisa Taylor (wrongly convicted in 1992 for the murder of Alison Shaughnessy). He also worked on the case of the Merthyr Tydfil Two (Donna Clarke and Annette Hewins), presenting scientific findings to South Wales Police regarding the fire that resulted in the police’s expert accepting his conclusions that the petrol bought by Hewins that night was not the petrol used in the fatal fire.

Jeffrey Mark Deskovic A New York based advocate was wrongly convicted in 1990 at the age of seventeen of raping, beating, and strangling Angela Correa, a 15-year-old high school classmate at Peekskill High School. On December 7, 1990 a jury convicted Deskovic based on testimony from Peekskill police detective Daniel Stephens that Deskovic had confessed to the crime. Deskovic proclaimed his innocence on numerous occasions after his conviction, but was repeatedly denied a reopening of the case by then district attorney Jeanine Pirro. Since at least 2000 Deskovic also appealed to D.A. Pirro to run DNA testing to help prove his innocence. Pirro declined to run any DNA tests that could help release Deskovic from prison. In 2006, the new district attorney, Janet DiFiore, authorized a DNA test which led to Deskovic’s exoneration. The DNA from the crime scene was matched to that of Steven Cunningham, another prison inmate who was serving a life term for another murder and later confessed to the Correa murder. Deskovic’s conviction was overturned and he was released. Jeffrey Deskovic is now an advocate for reform of the criminal justice system and works to educate the public through his public speaking, published articles, and The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice. He is a Mercy College alumnus.

Bishop Gregg L.Greer,  Gregg L. Greer  is a Public Speaker, Minister, American Journalist, Author, Economist and Social Activist. Greer is the Founder of Freedom First International and a prominent national human rights leader. Also, Greer is a Leader with the United Nations League of Nations Faith Assemblies Consortium. LON’FAC as well as a Global Citizen. To date Greer has worked on some American most notorious miscarriages of justice including Tamir Rice, George Stinney Jr, Semaj Crosby and Alton Sterling.  Greer is the founder of  Freedom First International- a non-governmental organization (NGO) working for alternatives to racial hate and promoting world peace.

Mark Clements was just 16 years old when Chicago police beat him in an interrogation room at Area Three in 1981. As a result of the beating, he signed a false confession to an arson that killed four people. Due to his age, he was not eligible for the death penalty, so instead, he was sentenced to life without parole. Mark Clements –served  28 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit!.

“In Memoriam” Tamir Rice June 25, 2002 -November 23, 2014

This coming week would have been the 16th birthday of  Tamir Rice. Freedom First international and it’s affiliates honor his life as we worked diligently both on the ground and nationally to help fight for justice.

The shooting of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy (June 25, 2002 – November 23, 2014), occurred on November 22, 2014, in Cleveland, Ohio. Two police officers, 26-year-old Timothy Loehmann and 46-year-old Frank Garmback, responded after receiving a police dispatch call of a black male that “keeps pulling a gun out of his pants and pointing it at people”. A caller reported that a male was pointing “a pistol” at random people in the Cudell Recreation Center. At the beginning of the call and again in the middle he says of the pistol “it’s probably fake”.  Toward the end of the two-minute call, the caller stated “he is probably a juvenile”.

However, this information was not relayed to Loehmann or Garmback on the initial dispatch. The officers reported that upon their arrival, they both continuously yelled “show me your hands” through the open patrol car window. Loehmann further claimed that instead of showing his hands, it appeared as if Rice was trying to draw: “I knew it was a gun and I knew it was coming out”. In response, the officer shot twice, hitting Rice once in the torso. He died on the following day.

Freedom First International’s (FFI)- President Gregg L Greer worked with the family to organize a stronger media effort both on ground nationally and internationally. FFI also organized multiple rallies in Cleveland, Oh area and abroad to galvanize the public over the course of two years.

With powerful relations Freedom First International helped organize a legal team who worked separately from our advocacy effort to assist the family with successful civil litigation.  Freedom First International even organized at the United Nations (UN) and hosted an event there to bring international attention to Tamir’s case.

We wish to thank all organizers and everyone in the community who stood on the front lines to fight against this unjustified case of injustice that took a promising young life. Our prayers remain with the family.

We pray for a world were children are safe from terror and oppression. Until then we will work towards Freedom.

“In Memoriam” George Stinney Jr. October 21, 1929 -June 16, 1944

George Stinney Jr.

Freedom First International, The Guilty in Innocence Project and affiliates-honor the life of George Stinney Jr.

An African-American young boy, George Stinney Jr., who was executed at age 14 in the killing of two young white girls has been exonerated in South Carolina, 70 years after he became the youngest person executed in the U.S. in the 1900s. A judge ruled he was denied due process.

In her ruling, Circuit Judge Carmen Mullen wrote that she found that “fundamental, Constitutional violations of due process exist in the 1944 prosecution of George Stinney, Jr., and hereby vacates the judgment.”

The case was brought by George Frierson of Manning, SC and his group known as-A New Day, and afterward assistance come with testimony from Stinney’s surviving siblings.

Our organization started in 2011 working  behind the scenes and on the ground with public rallies, and well as memorials. Also addition we help galvanize the international media and some legal research to bring further attention to this case-up-to the point of his exoneration.

george-stinney-rally

Another role we primarily accepted at the time was supporting George Frierson and his group with the memorial rededication which happened on July 16, 2016.  We like to thank George Frierson, Jennifer Bowers Olin, the Stinney Family and all organizations and advocates who helped overturn Georges conviction.

On December 17, 2014, his conviction was posthumously vacated 70 years after his execution, because the circuit court judge ruled that he had not been given a fair trial; he had no effective defense and his Sixth Amendment rights had been violated. The judgment noted that while Stinney may in fact have committed the crime, the prosecution and trial were fundamentally flawed. Judge Mullen ruled that his confession was likely coerced and thus inadmissible. She also found that the execution of a 14-year-old constituted “cruel and unusual punishment.”

BUILDING FREEDOM GALA

 Freedom First International

The Freedom First International was originally formed in 2009 and is an international non-governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on human rights. Headquartered in Chicago, IL with scheduled offices in New York City, London , and Orlando. The main aim was to advance the cause of civil rights, human rights and Social Justice in America in relation to liberation from unjust economic, political, or social conditions. It has been described as “an interpretation of Christian faith through the poor’s suffering, their struggle and hope, and a critique of society as an example “Christianity through the eyes of the poor” From its inception, this has been the vision of President/Founder Gregg L Greer.

As its title suggests “Freedom First,”, was born out of a rich civil rights tradition because it’s founder Gregg L. Greer wanted to help preserve the legacy of The Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or S.C.L.C (video, above) came primarily from the respect for the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In late 2009 while attending at Southern Christian Leadership Conference Meeting at Historical Ebenezer Baptist Church (which in 1960 Dr. King, Jr. became a co-pastor of Ebenezer with his father, “Daddy” King. King remained in that position until his death in 1968-. Greer found the vision and applied it in building his organization.

Greer started the Freedom First International as an initiative that searches for ideas that help bring social change by connecting thousands of people from all around the world believing that church leadership should play a major part in the lives of all, and church leaders should play a more significant role in communities around the world. First Freedom International was also influenced by an existing social theory that emphasizes of practice (or, more technically, “praxis”) over doctrine in the church which included Servant Christian base communities (SCBCs). Liberation Theology is the guiding principle of Freedom First, as it strives to be a bottom-up movement in practice, with Biblical interpretation and practice designed by lay practitioners themselves, rather than by the hierarchy.
