*Satish C. Sekar, Jeffery Deskovic, Mark Clements, and Bishop Gregg L.Greer will address the possible Death Penalty reinstatement -In early May Governor Bruce Rauner proposed reinstating the death penalty in Illinois for mass killers and people who slay law enforcement officers, injecting the idea into his re-election campaign by rewriting a gun control bill and sending it back to lawmakers.
Gov. Bruce Rauner seems to be one of the few people in Illinois who misses the death penalty. Our outcry is to begin coalition building in opposition of any proposal urgently and right now. Simply because the Governor is misdirected and there should be no death penalty anywhere much less in Illinois
Speaker Line Up
Satish C. Sekar (born September 1963) is a British author and journalist, and a consultant in forensic evidence. Sekar has specialized since the 1990s in the investigation of miscarriages of justice. His work has been published in newspapers including The Guardian, The Independent and Private Eye, and he has also worked for television documentaries including Panorama and Trial And Error. He has worked on a number of high-profile cases in the UK including the Cardiff Newsagent Three, Gary Mills and Tony Poole (wrongly convicted in 1990 for the murder of Hensley Wiltshire), the M25 Three, and Michelle and Lisa Taylor (wrongly convicted in 1992 for the murder of Alison Shaughnessy). He also worked on the case of the Merthyr Tydfil Two (Donna Clarke and Annette Hewins), presenting scientific findings to South Wales Police regarding the fire that resulted in the police’s expert accepting his conclusions that the petrol bought by Hewins that night was not the petrol used in the fatal fire.
Jeffrey Mark Deskovic A New York based advocate was wrongly convicted in 1990 at the age of seventeen of raping, beating, and strangling Angela Correa, a 15-year-old high school classmate at Peekskill High School. On December 7, 1990 a jury convicted Deskovic based on testimony from Peekskill police detective Daniel Stephens that Deskovic had confessed to the crime. Deskovic proclaimed his innocence on numerous occasions after his conviction, but was repeatedly denied a reopening of the case by then district attorney Jeanine Pirro. Since at least 2000 Deskovic also appealed to D.A. Pirro to run DNA testing to help prove his innocence. Pirro declined to run any DNA tests that could help release Deskovic from prison. In 2006, the new district attorney, Janet DiFiore, authorized a DNA test which led to Deskovic’s exoneration. The DNA from the crime scene was matched to that of Steven Cunningham, another prison inmate who was serving a life term for another murder and later confessed to the Correa murder. Deskovic’s conviction was overturned and he was released. Jeffrey Deskovic is now an advocate for reform of the criminal justice system and works to educate the public through his public speaking, published articles, and The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice. He is a Mercy College alumnus.
